We, at AfterLogic, actively support open source software initiatives by contributing our code to open source projects. Not only do we ship our commercial applications complete with source code, which allows for easier integration and customization, but in addition, we maintain two separate and independent open source projects that contain portions of the code, which is also present in our commercial products.

These two open source projects in turn help us improve our commercial software by harnessing the power of distributed community review of the applications and their underlying source code. Open source helps us maintain better product quality and, combined with our global software development model, we are able to keep our software prices and service rates at reasonable and affordable levels.

From the legal perspective, for those free systems that don’t depend on our .NET commercially licensed components, we’ve embraced one of the most popular and widely accepted open source licenses, GPLv2. This helps in streamlining and clarifying the software offering for open source projects under our leadership. Open source doesn't necessarily just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open source software must also comply with the expectations of the open source community, and GPLv2 helps us achieve this goal.

For those users who wish to avail themselves of free software, but also prefer to host these systems on the Microsoft platform, and therefore must rely on our .NET commercially licensed components, we’ve created a somewhat different offering. The ASP.NET Edition Single Computer License option allows for free downloading and use of the software on a single server without any cost, all under our existing AfterLogic Software License Agreement.
